"Sunken" - A Lighthouse Illustration

"Sunken" - A Lighthouse Illustration

Surprise surprise, another homesick piece of mine. I remember beginning this one while living in Vancouver, BC.

I had camped just outside of Squamish, and spent my day working on this drawing with a great view. I was going back and forth between my lighthouse and a very BC inspired piece. If that wasn’t indicative of my own inner debate I don’t know what is!

Anyhow, it was a gorgeous day.

Like much of my work, this piece includes a lot of patterns and a mandala styled border surrounding the lighthouse. I was imagining a kind of sunken, overgrown and murky lighthouse- It’s crawling with sealife, mollusks, crabs, seaweed growing out and on it. There’s jellyfish, crabs, and starfish all milling about.

For colour, I used a lot of that burnt orange / auburn colour that almost looks like PEI dirt. It’s a pretty difficult colour to find- The auburn in this illustration is a Copik marker, and the closest I could find to the Island mud shade!

I used Faber-Castell markers in this one as well. They are hands down my favourite- A full set has long been on my wish list. Aside from that, the illustration was created with my go-to Microns.

The original piece was done in my 11” x 14” mixed media notepad, and so I’ve been able to offer it as 11” x 14”, 8” x 10” and as a 5” x 7” card. I’ve seen a lot of people add this piece to their nautical collage walls, and frame the small cards! These options, along with the original piece, can all be found on my Etsy.
